Many useful skills are incorporated into the course including ICT and practical skills (leading to an extended investigation at A2). You will need to develop competence in basic statistical techniques.

Course Content And Method Of Assessment

AS level Human Biology is a one year course. All Human Biology students sit the AS level exam that consists of three units.

Unit 1 Molecules, Blood and Gas Exchange
In this unit, you will extend your knowledge of the blood system and the lungs, how they function as systems for exchange and transport. You will need to learn some basic biochemistry.

Unit 2 Growth, Development and Disease
Here you will study cells, their structure and function, how development of individuals can be monitored and how individuals can be affected by disease. Examination of this unit will include questions based on a pre-released case study.

Unit 3 Practical Skills - internal assessment in the context of units 1 and 2

A2 Human Biology requires a second year of study and builds on the AS Human Biology. It also consists of three units.

Unit 4 Energy, Reproduction and Populations
This unit will provide you with the knowledge and understanding of the need of energy within individuals and ecosystems and the effects of human impact on the environment.

Unit 5 Genetics, Control and Ageing
The principles of heredity in relation to the inheritance of genetic diseases, the structure and function of the nervous system and homeostasis will be considered in this unit and will lead to a study of the effects of ageing on the human body.

Unit 6 Extended Investigation in Human Biology

After The Course

Human Biology provides a foundation for a large number of degree courses but a majority of students gaining A2 level in Human Biology progress onto courses in Health Studies or Medicine. Human Biology is a rewarding and challenging course which will develop many of the skills essential for a wide range of careers.

Subject Combinations
