AS and A2 level Biology (Human)

Human Biology is an exciting and stimulating course that covers how the human body functions from a cellular level up to the physiology that keeps us functioning as living organisms. It explores the implications of recent scientific developments such as DNA technology and the roles of various health professionals. Practical procedures such as CPR and renal dialysis are covered. Much of the course delivery has a medical context â€" for example the studying of enzymes is linked to the blood-clotting cascade and the conditions for storing blood products.

WHAT WILL I BE STUDYING ON THE COURSE?
The AS course covers key biological molecules such as haemoglobin, components of blood and their uses, the heart and circulatory system including coronary heart disease, lungs, gas exchange and lung disease, cell cycle and cancer, the developing infant, diabetes, infectious diseases and immunity.

In A2, the detailed biochemistry of respiration and protein synthesis are covered. Genetic techniques and the inheritance of genetic disease is considered along with ethical implications. The physiology of key body systems is covered as are associated diseases such as diabetes and kidney disease, brain function, the eye and the effects of traumatic brain injury. Reproduction and the effects of ageing are also studied.

The AS units are:

·Molecules, Blood and Gas Exchange
(30% of AS)

·Growth, Development and Disease(50% of AS)

·Practical Skills in Human Biology(20% of AS)

The A2 units are:

·Energy, Reproduction and Populations(30% of A2)

·Genetics, Control and Ageing(50% of A2)

·Extended Investigation in Human Biology(20% of A2)

WHAT WILL I BE DOING IN LESSONS?
We will ensure that you cover all the theory required in the syllabus so that you can prepare for your unit tests with confidence. This will include developing exam techniques. You will be involved in a range of activities including: individual and group work, practical investigations, tutorials and lectures, videos and computer software. You will have every opportunity to develop your practical skills as there will be a number of examinable assessment tests throughout the course.

HOW WILL THE COURSE BE ASSESSED?
Each unit will be assessed by a test containing a mixture of short answer questions, structured questions requiring longer answers and experimental skills. For the latter there is an extended investigation in the second year. Unit tests will contribute 80% and the experimental skills 20% to your final grade.

WHAT OTHER SUBJECTS COULD I DO WITH HUMAN BIOLOGY?
You can combine a range of subjects with Human Biology. We strongly recommend studying Chemistry with Human Biology. Other complementary subjects include Geography and Psychology.

AND AFTER THE COURSE?
The range of courses and work opportunities involving Human Biology is vast and includes: medicine, physiotherapy, biomedical engineering, dentistry, radiography, haematology, biochemistry, pharmacology, biotechnology, genetics, embryology, immunology, nursing and many more.
