Course content:
The course aims:
- to develop understanding of the spoken and written forms of the language from a variety of registers
- to develop effective communication skills in both the written and spoken forms

- to develop critical insights into, and contact with, the contemporary society, cultural background and heritage of countries or communities where the language is spoken
- to develop positive attitudes to foreign language learning
Assessment procedure:
Final assessment consists of:-
one written examination (17.5%)
a course work element (15%)
one speaking examination (17.5%)
Unit 4: Module 4: Contemporary Issues
LISTENING, READING, WRITING (17.5% of A Level marks): 2 hours 30 minutes.
Candidates will be issued with a question paper/answer book and an individual cassette which they will control themselves, stopping and replaying as they see fit. The cassette will contain about 7 minutes of authentic material. The reading material will include items such as extracts from magazines, reports and books. Both spoken and written material will generally be longer and use more complex language than that included in Unit 1 of the AS examination. A range of exercises will be set which will require mainly short and some longer answers in the language. There will also be an exercise requiring the transfer of meaning. 12% of the marks available will be for synoptic assessment.
Unit 5C: Module 5:
The Cultural and Social Landscape in Focus
COURSEWORK (15% of A Level marks)
Candidates will be required to submit two assignments in the language demonstrating an in-depth knowledge of two texts/topics set in Module 5. The assignments must be submitted in written form. Each assignment must be approximately 700 words in length.
Unit 6: Module 6:
Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow SPEAKING (17.5% of A Level marks) 35 minutes.
This unit consists of two parts:
Part 1 - Reporting and Discussion.
Candidates will have 20 minutes supervised preparation time during which they will prepare one of two cards given by the examiner. The material on the cards will consist of short articles in English taken from magazines or newspapers. Candidates may make notes to refer to refer to during the examination. Guidance questions will not be supplied. The candidate will be expected to respond to questions about the material and discuss issues arising from it (5 minutes).
Part 2 - Conversation.
Candidates will take part in a general conversation based on 2 or 3 of the topics studied during the A2 course, including the topics studied for Module 5. They will not be informed of these topics before the examination. 7.5 % of the marks available will be for synoptic assessment.
