WHO IS THE COURSE FOR?
OPEN LEARNING is a way of studying by a "non-traditional" method, where you can study at your own pace and fit in your learning with work and family commitments. It is ideal for anyone who is unable to attend classes on a regular basis. This course is perfect if you want to achieve an A Level for further study, work or just out of interest
WHAT WILL I LEARN?
The study of psychology will help you understand your own behaviour as well as that of other people. The course also looks at topical issues, such as stress, eyewitness testimony and eating disorders that can be better understood and managed using psychological methods. This course will help you:
- develop knowledge and understanding of concepts, theories and studies in relation to Cognitive, Developmental, Social and Biological Psychology and Individual Differences
- develop skills of analysis, evaluation and application
- develop knowledge and understanding of Research Methods associated with each of the areas of psychology studied
- analyse and evaluate research studies relevant to each of the areas of psychology studied
- develop knowledge and understanding of ethical issues associated with each of the areas studied
- demonstrate an appreciation of the skills, knowledge and understanding of How Science Works through the study of psychology
The course has been written in a practical and interactive style with activities and self-check questions. The course materials are:
- total of 2 units with self-contained topics that are structured to help you learn
- an assignment guide designed to help you complete your assignments
- a glossary and index so that you are never far from the information you need
- Psychology for AQA A (4th edition), by Cardwell, Clark and Meldrum, Collins Education (ISBN 9780007255047)

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
Mode of study - open/distance learning.
Study time - Each of the topics is self-contained and takes about 2-3 hours of study time. If you intend to take the exam and plan on studying every topic, you will need to study for at least 5 hours per week for approximately 9 months. The course also contains 7 assignments with advice on how and when to complete them.
Duration - all A2 Level subjects are studied over one academic year.
Start date - enrolment can take place anytime throughout the year but A2 Level exams are set for May/June and January. It is therefore a good idea to enrol at the earliest opportunity to give you the maximum amount of time to complete the course.
Examination structure - This course will prepare you to sit the A2 Units for the AQA 6181 specification. These units can be taken individually in the months indicated above (modular assessment) or altogether at the end of the course (linear assessment).
A2 Unit 3: Topics in psychology
25% of overall exam mark lasts for 1.5 hours
One essay-style question per topic studied
A2 Unit 4: Psychopathology, psychology in action & research methods
25% of overall mark lasts 2 hours
One essay question on schizophrenia, one question on the psychology of addictive behaviour, and one compulsory structured question on research methods.
