Course Content: This course is for those interested in understanding the intricate workings of the English Language in different contexts.
In your first year, you will learn how to analyse texts and also how social contexts such as power, gender and technology play a part in our language use. You will also produce two pieces of creative coursework and two commentaries analysing your own work.
In your second year you will study how language has changed over time and possible changes in the future. You will also study how children acquire spoken, written and reading skills studying the strategies they use in order to learn these language skills.
You will investigate a language topic of your own choice and produce a media piece related to this topic for your coursework unit.
Planned trips are organised at least once a year for a language day school. Master classes run by university colleagues are also available throughout the year to include forensic linguistics.
Course Format: You will be expected to contribute to group and whole class discussions. You will be asked to produce group and independent study/research. You will be given regular worksheets and tasks as well as analytical exercises and essays.
Class exercises will be set regularly and will have detailed feedback so that you can see your strengths and also where improvements might be made. You will sit an AS exam in May and your coursework will be handed in at Easter for external moderation
Progression: Progression at A2 depends on your performance at AS. Generally we can accept a D grade as a minimum grade to progress to A2.
