2. Course description This is a fully integrated course where you will use both linguistic and literary approaches to texts showing how the two disciplines can relate to each other. You will participate in a whole range of activities and writing assignments contributing to group discussions presentations and a wide variety of teaching and learning activities. You need to have an interest in how language is used in a wide variety of spoken and written texts and a desire to analyse its usage critically and rigorously. Whilst English Lang Lit at A Level will develop your GCSE skills it is completely different to GCSE! You will read literary texts and develop and apply your knowledge of literary analysis and evaluation paying close attention to the ways texts relate to each other and the contexts in which they are produced and received. You will study a wide range of genres of texts (six substantial texts prose fiction poetry drama and non fiction texts). You need to enjoy reading to succeed on this course and to read independently as well as reading the set texts. In your second year you will undertake an independent creative task (the coursework unit) which will be worth 20percent of your grade other elements will be assessed through examinations at the end of the two year course. You will make links between the various elements of the course throughout the two years and demonstrate your knowledge and skills throughout.
