The first year (AS) includes: a submission of a coursework folder of two pieces of work: an analytical comparison of two texts (one written, one multimodal e.g. email, advert, website), and adaptive writing plus commentary (where you adapt one of the texts from part 1 into a new text with a different audience or purpose. As well as two exam units: ‘Speech and Children’ and ‘Speech Varieties and Social Groups’ The second year (A2) year will develop your AS knowledge through two units: ‘Language and the Media’, where you will be required to submit a coursework folder of 3,000 words and a "Language, Culture and Identity" exam unit which focuses on the study of texts in three modes: spoken, written, and multimodal, and a compulsory module on Accent and Dialects in Britain, which includes technical linguistics and the study of "notions of correctness in language usage", helping you develop an evaluative insight into language use by different social groups in a variety of social contexts.
