A Level English Literature (OCR)
You will study a range of novels, plays and poetry. You will examine the way the writer has structured and written the text, the effects of the historical context in which it was produced, and the ways in which different people can interpret the text. You will also pay close attention to the importance of literary genre, different aspects of narrative, and approaches to the critical study of texts. This is a course for people who enjoy reading widely, including novels, drama and poetry, and discussing works of literature in small groups and with the whole class. You will need to be able to express your ideas clearly in writing.

What will I be doing?
AS Level (First year of Course)
Poetry and Prose 1800-1945.
You will study one poet (Robert Frost ) and one prose text (The Great Gatsby ) from the period. You will analyse the effects of language, imagery and verse form and demonstrate your understanding of the significance of context on the poems. When studying prose, you will explore how themes and issues are presented and take into account the effects of language, form and structure.

Literature post-1900.

You will complete two coursework tasks, one which requires you to produce a piece of re-creative writing with analysis and the other which requires you to compare two texts. The texts that you will study are Annie John , The Lonely Londoners and Small Island. In the coursework tasks you will use appropriate terminology, understand the significance of contexts and explore connections and comparisons between texts.

A2 Level (Second year of Course)
Drama and Poetry pre-1800

You will study one Shakespeare play and another play from the pre-1800s. You will also study poetry from the same period. You will continue to develop your ability to explore contrasts, connections and comparisons and demonstrate your critical understanding of the texts.

Texts in Time
For this unit you will submit an extended essay of 3000 words in which you are required to make a comparative analysis of three texts. You will study one prose and one poetry text and the third one will be from any genre.

How will I be assessed?
Throughout the course you will be given regular assessed written tasks to help you develop the skills necessary for exam success.

You will be formally assessed by exams in June and through the coursework folders (40% of total A level) as outlined above.

English leads naturally to careers in journalism, publishing, law, and education. Many Universities see English as evidence of a well-rounded and widely read student who possesses good writing skills, and the skills of analysis and communication you will acquire are useful for a range of careers. The study of English Literature encourages critical and analytical thinking and develops a high reading stamina.
