Sociology is the academic study of social behaviour, including its origins, development, organisation, and institutions. Sociology questions assumptions about the social world and considers whether such things as the family, gender relationships and race are socially constructed rather than naturally occurring. If you are considering a career in Sociology, then this is a great place to start.

This Oxbridge Home Learning course will present you with various sociological theories and ask you to draw on your own experience and background knowledge as well as what you learn in the course to test their validity and accuracy. You will gain an understanding of the importance of theoretical and conceptual issues in sociological debate. You will also look at your own personal identity, roles and responsibilities within society.

As well as being an academic subject in its own right, sociology forms part of many other programmes such as business studies, medical training, geography and environmental science and the newer sports and health sciences.

People who study sociology go on into a wide variety of jobs. You will gain a range of very valuable skills, transferable skills. You will learn how to work independently. You will learn how to find information, extract what is important from it and turn it into an argument.

Beyond this many people today study sociology for the personal enrichment it brings them, broadening their minds and enabling them to see their world in new and interesting ways. Sociology is one of the most popular subjects studied today.
