Course programme

Potential students who have only a limited knowledge or understanding of double entry book-keeping are likely to find it beneficial to enrol on the 6 week Basic Bookkeeping course through the Adult Education department at the college prior to taking the entrance test for AAT Level 3 (note this will not guarantee successful entry to the AAT).

The course is for those wishing to pursue a career in accountancy, and those who already work in this area and want a nationally recognised accounting qualification.

The AAT courses cover all aspects of accounting including financial accounting, management accounting and indirect taxation. A detailed prospectus is available for each level and more information is available on the AAT website at

Level 3 students will be required to attend college for 3 hours per week over two years. In certain circumstances students may be able to complete in one year if they could attend for two sessions each week. This option would require an exceptionally high level of commitment and students would need to discuss their options with the course co-ordinator prior to making any firm decision.

Classes will combine conventional lectures with practical task based learning exercises. In addition to scheduled classes students are provided with work books which they are expected to study and work through at home. Students should expect to study at home for a minimum of 3 hours per week if course is taken over 2 years, and 6 hours per week if course is taken over 1 year. Students will also be given guidance on how to use the college intranet.

Assessment at Level 3 is primarily by computer based examinations set by the AAT.

On successful completion of level 3 the student may wish to progress to level 4.
