About this course

You must be able to read fluently and to write independently with reasonable spelling, grammar and punctuation skills. You should be able to read, understand and use numbers in measurements and graphs. You will need to attend an interview to assess your English, maths and computing skills.

What will I learn?
This course will provide you with a general introduction to childcare, covering topics such as getting started in a preschool setting. You will develop greater skills and knowledge in childcare and will have the opportunity to use the computer, improve your maths and English, and gain an understanding of social and personal issues. You will be able to examine the role of pre-schools as centres of learning for children. You will also be able to give a basic description of what and how children learn in pre-school settings and list the ways through which the adults in the pre-school setting can support children's learning and development.

How will I be taught?
This course is delivered in the classroom through practical tasks, discussions, worksheets, role play, presentations and debates.

How will I be assessed?
For the childcare certificate you will need to produce a portfolio of work, which will be assessed by your teacher. For English, Maths and ICT, you will take an exam at the end of the year.

What could I do next?
You could progress to other vocational or academic courses such as BTEC and NVQ childcare courses or to work in childcare.
