Attendance
Five days per week normally between 9am - 5pm on college days but placement days often start at 8.30am and may end after 5.00pm e.g in day nursery.

Description of the Course
This is a demanding full time course which provides a thorough training for those who wish to work with children aged 0-16 years in schools, nurseries, hospitals, residential homes, creches or families. It is also recognised in many places abroad if you wish to work outside the UK. You will undertake part of your course at college and part in training placements in the community so that you will gain experience with all age groups.
Course content
There are a variety of units to be studied, some relate to working with and caring for young children, others are about all aspects of children's development and education. You will also learn about working with families and carers, with other professionals and finally you will look at the legal, historical, social, economic and environmental factors which affect children and their families. You will need a mature attitude and a great deal of commitment to complete this course but you should also find your studies rewarding and interesting. Units:

· An introduction to working with children.
· Development form conception to age 16 years.
· Support Children.
· Keeping children safe.
· The principles underpinning the role of the practitioner working with children.
· Promoting a healthy environment for children.
· Play and learning in children's education.
· Caring for children.
· Development of professional skills within chidlren's education.
· Working with children with special needs.
· Developing children's (3-8) mathematical skills.
· Developing children's (3-8) communication, language and literacy skills.

Assessment
National Assignments, Portfolios, college based course work, practical assessment in training placements and a set of external assessments which consist of a multiple choice exam, a case study short answer exam and a research exam.

Students should be aware that in order to attend mandatory work placements they will be required to complete a CRB (Criminal Records Bureau) check. Enrichment Activities
