If you are aged between 19 - 24 and you dont have a qualification equivalent to 2 A levels, you can study any level 3 course for free. These courses may also be free for people on means-tested benefits.
Course Content: The Access to HE Diploma is an alternative route into Higher Education for mature learners. It provides a good foundation for progression into Higher Education because it includes not only subject specific knowledge, but also study skills and professional development. It also includes Level 2 Literacy and Numeracy for those who do not have these essential qualifications.
The programme was designed specifically for mature learners who have few formal qualification and who have had a break from education.
From September 2008 the qualification will become an Access to HE Diploma consisting of standardised, regional, core and optional units. This programme makes stringent requirements on learners in terms of time commitment and academic development and as such may take two years to complete. The exception is learners who have Level 2 Literacy and Numeracy qualifications already.
The Content is as follows:
Foundation Year (Level 2)
This is the first stage of the Access to HE Diploma. Learners who successfully complete this year will be awarded the Progression Award Diploma allowing progression onto the second year.

PATHWAY STRUCTURE:
Diploma Year (Level 3)
This is the second stage of the Access to HE Diploma. Learners who successfully complete this year will be awarded the Access to HE Diploma.
Special Features: This programme is specifically designed for adults who have been out of education for some time and as such, a special feature of the programme is the individualised support that learners receive alongside the main programme. For example, some learners are dyslexic, but have nevertheless succeeded in fulfilling their ambition to study at a higher level. The programme is also designed to accommodate the needs of parents and people who have flexible work patterns.
Course Format: We will discuss your career goals and how the programme fits in with these, the time commitment required for the course and financial issues.
Progression: This pathway leads onto Dip HE Nursing and Degree course in Nursing and Midwifery. The local universities are Manchester, Salford, Manchester Metropolitan University and Huddersfield. Please note that Midwifery is very competitive. You will need an A level and Access to HE if you apply to Manchester University. You must also have Level 2 Literacy and Numeracy qualifications before any University will accept you.
