If so, our Access to HE Teacher Training course could be the perfect course for you. Access courses are specifically designed for adults who have been out of education for some time but are now ready for the challenge of university.

The course is made up of various modules designed to prepare you for the demands of higher level study. You will become a critical thinker, develop writing techniques and research skills and also be able to deliver professional presentations.

Entry requirements

• You must be at least 19 years of age to enrol on an Access to HE course.
• GCSE maths and English at C grade or above (GCSE equivalent qualifications will not be accepted). You may take GCSE science alongside the Access programme if needed.
• Learners are advised that if they only have two GCSEs they are taking a risk as several Higher Education institutions require all three to be achieved before application.
• Students for this diploma must arrange a work placement in school of at least 21 days duration

This course is eligible for a 24+ Advanced Learning Loan

The 24+ Advanced Learning Loan is a new scheme introduced by the government to help mature learners study for qualifications that will improve their employability and develop high level skills and knowledge.

Loans are specifically designed for those aged 24 and over, who are intending to study on a Level 3 or higher course – including Access to HE diplomas.

Best of all, if you successfully go on to complete an HE qualification following an Access to HE course – you won’t even have to pay the loan back.

Our Access to HE courses can be studied within one academic year – up to 450 hours of class time.

How will I be assessed?

In order to prepare you for university, the Access to HE Teacher Training course assessments will be varied. You will deliver presentations, write academic reports and sometimes sit an exam.

What does the course lead to?

This course will allow you to enter into an extremely rewarding career working in education. This may be within primary, secondary, further or higher education. University courses include:

• BA (Hons) with QTS (Primary Education)
• BA (Hons) Education Studies
• A BA or BSc followed by a Post Graduate Certificate in Education (PGCE)

The college also offer their own entry into teaching through the Foundation Degree Children's and Young People's Services.

Starting wages for a newly qualified teacher in England and Wales are £22,023, with potential future earnings of £32,187.

Also if you decide teaching is not for you this course can lead to teaching assistant qualifications.

What will I study?

A range of subjects that will allow you to become a sought after university candidate. Modules include:

• Study skills - this will focus on the generic skills required for high level study (essay and report writing; referencing, critical thinking and analysis etc.).
• Practical issues in teaching – this will see you getting involved with teaching first hand at a work placement (arranged by yourself) and then assessing the practices you witness.
• Language studies – an opportunity to study the origins of language and how it has developed over time.
• Literary studies – covering poetry, drama and fiction works
• History – key issues in 1820-1850’s Britain
• Key studies in psychology – an awareness of learners’ needs and how it impacts on their development.
• Sociology perspectives in education – why do some social groups fail in education? A look at contributing factors and theories.
• Maths (level 3) – an opportunity to brush up on and develop vital maths skills.
