The course develops crucial academic skills (such as academic writing, time management, research and referencing) in addition to delivering sound knowledge and understanding. This will enable you to apply for and progress on to our Foundation Degrees in either Applied Computing or Networking and Security or a suitable course at an alternative university. The foundation degree is the first two years of an Honours degree and you can then complete your Honours degree studying with ourselves by completing one further year. These degree courses are designed so that you can study and work at the same time.
In addition your course tutors are committed to enhancing your awareness of employability skills and opportunities within the region.

Course programme

To achieve the Diploma in Computer Science you will study a total of 60 credits over a single academic year. All students must study academic skills (the toolkit needed for success at university) as well as other modules including Web Development, Systems Analysis, Database Design, Computer Architecture and components, Software Development and Project Management. Units delivered using a mixture of classroom delivery and independent study, learning is facilitated by formal lectures, practical group work and ICT interaction. The course develops crucial academic skills (such as academic writing, time management, research and referencing) in addition to delivering sound knowledge and understanding. This will enable you to apply for and progress on to our Foundation Degrees in either Applied IT or Networking and Systems Security or a suitable course at an alternative university. At the moment it is intended that the course will be delivered at our Horsforth Campus utilising computer suites and classrooms. You must be 19 years of age by 1st September in the year the course starts and have achieved four GCSEs at grade C or above including Maths and English. If you are aged 19 or over and considering enrolling on a further education course at Level 3 or above, you may be entitled to an Advanced Learner Loan to help with course fees.

The course provides foundation knowledge and an exemplary experience of laboratory practical work in addition to equipping students with the skills necessary to succeed at university.
