This access course helps you pursue a career in local government, the civil service, trade unions, social services, voluntary organisations, charities or NGOs among others... You will study topics in politics, current affairs, and issues such as power, class, gender and race in contemporary society... On the course you will study an introductory sociology unit; examine contemporary social stratification (class, race, gender & age); look at the relationship between power and politics and the impact of the mass media on society; conduct a research project concerning the impact of the Victorian period on the local area; examine literature from the counter culture; look at some of the issues in contemporary ethics; as well as examining the ways in which deviance has been defined and addressed... Alongside the subject classes, you will also be given the opportunity to develop your study skills... You will develop your ability to learn and develop the necessary academic skills, such as essay writing, delivering presentations, research skills which will prepare you for study at university.
