Course summary:
Ever thought about a career in teaching, midwifery, nursing, health studies, social science, science...? Always wanted to go to university - but never got the chance? The Access Programme is for people exactly like you. It is ideal for adults who are looking for a career or life change.
Course content:
Before you start the course, you will need to consider what sort of job, career or degree you eventually wish to follow. This helps you to decide which subjects to study.
Most students decide to study a 'pathway', which provides an entry qualification to University.
'Pathways' are combinations of subjects which are tailored to fit a university course or specific career. For example, a student wishing to become a nurse would follow the nursing pathway.
Pathways on offer at South Tyneside College include;
Combined ( a general route which covers a range of different subjects)
Science
Social Sciences
Nursing/Health
Whichever pathway you choose, you will study a number of core subjects which will help you to develop valuable transferable study skills. These include IT and Communication.
For every subject you successfully complete, you will earn 'credits'. To achieve the Access Programme qualification, you must complete 60 'credits' in total.
In addition, studenst are encouraged to also do GCSE's in Maths and English in dedicated APHE classes if appropriate.
How do I know which Pathway to Choose?
If you're unsure about your long-tem plans, you can choose our combined pathway. This pathway is more general in the subjects it covers, but is structured and accessed in the same way as the other pathways. Your certificate will say 'Combined Pathway' on it when it is successfully completed.
How long does this all take?
The course can be completed in anything from one year to two years.
