opportunity for hands-on experience of using market leading accounting and business software packages, from SAGE for the small and medium enterprises, to SAP for the international companies;
studying with Coventry Business School which is currently a member of European Foundation for Management Development (EFMD) and the Association of Business Schools (ABS);
access to academic staff with relevant professional backgrounds and industry experience, who bring this into their teaching.

This course gives you the option to specialise in accountancy as well as finance, and you could benefit from many of the exemptions that are available from the Association of Certified Chartered Accountants (ACCA), the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants (CIMA) and the Institute of Chartered Accountants England and Wales (ICAEW) with whom we are also a partner in learning. The exemptions will be available depending on the choices you make through your studies. This could provide a great first step in starting your accountancy career and will save you time and money when looking to complete your professional qualification after you graduate. If you choose the finance route there are a wide range of career opportunities for young ambitious graduates looking to work in finance.

Course programme

WHAT WILL I LEARN?

In the first year, you will study a range of topics including financial accounting, management accounting, personal finance mathematics, statistics and business economics, as well as ensuring you have appropriate numeracy and IT skills for further study in accounting and finance.

During the second year, there is a greater emphasis in the areas of both accounting and finance within a business context. You will further develop your knowledge of financial and management accounting together with the principles of finance. As an Accounting and Finance student, you can also study Accounting Information Systems which provides great exposure to SAGE and SAP, two accounting information systems used widely by small businesses and major global companies.

In the final year of study, a wide range of option subjects in accounting and finance areas are available including: Auditing, International Corporate Reporting, International Taxation, Investment Analysis, Portfolio Management, and International Finance.

HOW WILL THIS COURSE BE TAUGHT?

Your course will be based on a series of weekly lectures, small group seminars and workshops. Classes may be held in IT suites where students have individual PCs and work using appropriate software packages. Your personal tutor will review and discuss your progress and will be available for advice.

HOW WILL I BE ASSESSED?

An estimated percentage breakdown of how your final grade is assessed is as follows: formal examinations 70%; coursework, tests, essays 20%; group work etc.5%; presentations, posters etc. 5%.

TEACHING CONTACT HOURS

In a typical week you will have up to 14 contact hours of teaching and this will break down as:

Personal tutorial/small group teaching: 2 hours of tutorials (or later, project supervision) each week

Medium group teaching: 6 hours of practical classes, workshops or seminars each week

Large group teaching: 6 hours of lectures

Personal study: 22-24 hours studying and revising in your own time each week, including some guided study using handouts, online activities, etc.

Accreditation: Additional fees may apply.

Partner in learning: The Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales (ICAEW)

Membership: European Foundation for Management Development (EFMD)

Accreditations, partnerships, memberships and exemptions shall be renewed in accordance with the relevant bodies’ standard review process and subject to the University maintaining the same high standards of course delivery.
