This course will provide you with the opportunity to be taught and assessed in a real working environment. There will be theory sessions linked to practical sessions which will enable you to understand the physiological effects of exercise on the body.
You will study anatomy, physiology, health and safety and how to plan, prepare and deliver an exercise session as well as exploring the principles of exercise, fitness and health with a focus on how physical activity will benefit individuals and help to reduce the risk of various conditions and illnesses.You will also gain an understanding of health and safety in the work environment to ensure safe participation in exercise. As part of the practical element of the course, you will be required to demonstrate excellent customer service and competency within the gym environment.
You can take advantage of the on-site fitness suite at the James Watt Campus to enhance learning of the working environment as well as completing a work experience placement.

Course programme
Entry Requirements
You will 4 GCSEs at grade D or above which may include maths and English. You should have an enthusiasm for working in the leisure industry and regularly attend the gym.You will need to have good communication skills and a sound underpinning knowledge of gym equipment to enable you to instruct in the gym effectively. You will be required to attend an interview and trade test as well as completing an initial assessment to demonstrate your literacy skills. You will also be required to secure a work placement in a health club or leisure centre.
Delivery and Assessment
You will be assessed through a mixture of practical and theory assessments. There will be range of multiple choice exams to pass and you will be continually assessed throughout the course on various training methods with a range of clients within college and on work placement. A portfolio of evidence will be gathered over the duration of the programme to ensure a sound knowledge and occupational competency is gained.
Progression
You can progress to other fitness instructing qualifications such as Exercise to Music, Circuit Training & Level 3 Personal Trainer. Or take up a career within the fitness industry i.e. health clubs and/or leisure centres.
