Overview

The ACET is designed to assess the knowledge and skills of those transporting horses in connection with an economic activity on both short journeys (over 65km but not exceeding eight hours) and long journeys (over eight hours).

The qualification has three units:


Unit 1 Transportation of Horses During Long Journeys - mandatory
Unit 2 Handle Horses for Transportation
Unit 3 Drive a Vehicle Transporting Horses are Optional

  • Attendant option - candidate must complete units 1 & 2
  • Driver option - candidate must complete units 1 & 3
  • Attendant/Driver option - candidate must complete units 1,2 & 3


Unit 1: Transportation of Horses During Long Journeys

  • Animal Welfare
  • Horse health, food, rest & water
  • Loading & unloading
  • Planning a journey exceeding 8 hours
  • Health & safety regulations & ability to identify & minimise risks
  • Vehicle travel compartments & use of fittings & partitions
  • Vehicle preparation & cleanliness
  • Knowledge of requirements for rest, food & water on journeys exceeding 8 hours


Unit 2: Handling Horses for Transportation

  • Demonstration of practical performance in preparing horses for transportation
  • Demonstration of practical performance in loading, securing & unloading horses

Unit 3: Drive a Vehicle Transporting Horses

  • Demonstration of practical performance in driving a vehicle transporting horses


The Test


The ACET is achieved through a combination of external testing (Unit 1) and practical assessment (Units 2 & 3). The external test comprises a short multiple choice test paper.

For the Attendant option the candidate must demonstrate practical skills in loading and unloading horses and operating the vehicle fixtures and fittings when securing horses in vehicles.

For the Driver option the candidate must demonstrate the skills of driving a vehicle carrying horses.

For the Attendant/Driver option the candidate must complete Units 1, 2 & 3.
