To enable learners to acquire skills in business and administration. In particular, communication, numeracy, computer literacy, social and practical skills will be enhanced. Suitable for those studying in preparation for employment in the business/administration sector, particularly where they will be expected to use communication and IT skills, liaise with customers and carry out customer-facing operational roles. This qualification is also suitable for those wishing to progress to higher education to study Business/Administration related subjects, i.e. Human Resource Management, Marketing, Accounting, Management or Business Systems.

About this course

Normal entry requirements for this course are 4 GCSE's at Grade C or above (including English and Maths), but positive consideration will be given to applicants who possess an equivalent qualification.

What will I Learn?
The learner will be required to achieve a total of twelve units. These are shown below:

Year 1
(These units must be achieved to progress on to the second year).

Investigating Business
Includes business ownerships, structure, functions, role of stakeholders, location, competition and growth/decline of industry

Customer Service
Investigates all aspects of delivering a first class service to all customers

Business Communications
Producing business letters, memos, reports, e-mails etc to a professional and legally accepted standard

Finance for Business
Interpreting business accounts, profit/loss accounts, balance sheets, ratios, cash flow, costing, economic environment and financial institutions

Recruitment and Selection
Investigating the processes and procedures and legal constraints involved in recruiting all levels of staff in the business environment

Employee Relations
Includes the development of relationships between employers and employees, union involvement, ACAS, Industrial Tribunals, EU & UK legislation and economic/political change and influences
Learners successfully completing the above units will be awarded the OCR National Certificate in Business, Level 3.

Year 2

Marketing for Business
Developing a marketing strategy for a new or improved product/service. Includes 4P's, market research, marketing models, pricing and promotional techniques

Practical Sales
Identifying direct and indirect sales, practising sales skills and qualities, selling methods and investigating consumer legislation

Human Resource Management
Research effectiveness of different management styles, HR functions i.e. recruitment, training, performance management, health & safety, remuneration

Quality Systems
Develops knowledge of quality systems within businesses and costs and benefits of implementing a quality assurance procedure

Motivating & Empowering People
Develops knowledge of motivational theories, financial and non-financial motivators and the impact of motivation and empowerment on business activities

Practical Administration
Develops theoretical and practical skills in effective office administration including teamwork, office layouts, resource planning, use of ICT, office functions and demonstrating administration skills in an office environment
Learners successfully completing all 12 units will be awarded the OCR National Diploma in Business, Level 3.

How will I Learn?
A variety of teaching and learning methods will be used to encourage learners to achieve their potential. These include attending lectures, working with case studies, researching information, providing presentations, working in groups and developing practical skills/activities.

How will I be Assessed?
There will be regular tutorials with the Course Tutor to ensure the learner is meeting agreed targets and assignment deadlines. Assignments will be graded as either a Pass, Merit or Distinction.

What Enrichments are Available?
A selection of enrichments will be available for learners to choose. Some of which could include Text & Word Processing, Legal and/or Medical Word Processing, Business French, Business Spanish, Book-keeping, and Functional Skills in ICT/Numeracy Level 2 in year 1. Learners may also wish to take part in sporting activities which will be available.

Are there any Trips or Visits?
Learners will be required to attend trips/visits arranged by Course/subject tutors. Visits in the past have included Manchester Airport, Cadbury World, Jaguar, The Deep and Scunthorpe United. These visits enable learners to gather research required to assist with several subjects on the course.

Is there any Work Experience?
Learners will be required to take part in a 2 week block work placement, each year, with a local employer. The experience allows the learner to put their newly developed business skills into practice.

What can I Progress to?
Learners successfully completing the two year programme will be awarded the OCR National Diploma in Business, Level 3. This is a nationally recognised qualification that enables learners to enter employment or further study in Higher Education (HND/Degree programmes).

Other Learners Experiences:
Successful learners in previous years have gone on to study Higher Education courses in Business Studies, Business & Marketing, Human Resources Management, Accountancy, Business Law, Public Administration, Business Administration and Criminology.
Learners entering the work place have gained employment with Solicitors, Banks, Building Societies, Estate Agents, Builders Merchants, Corus, Local Council, Schools and Colleges, Car Sales Show Rooms, the Health Service and the Police Force.
