Ludwig Van Beethoven said that "The Guitar is a miniature orchestra in itself." This course examines the fundamental principles behind the electric guitar and the innovations in technology that have driven its ongoing popularity. Through a combination of lectures and workshops we'll explore the history of its evolution, asking why a Stratocaster sounds different to a Jazzmaster, why vintage Les Pauls are so prized, how how different pedals work and and why valve amps give you such great tone. On this 10 week programme we'll cover all you need to know about electric guitars, pedals, amps and recording processes. Each week willl begin with an informal lecture, followed by group discussion on a specific era of the electric guitar and its development throughout the 20th and 21st centuries. We'll explore how technology influenced the music being made, in range of musical genres. You'll then have the opportunity to try out different equipment, from top-quality vintage amplifiers and guitars to contemporary high-end equipment in the Electronic Music Studio in our Department of Music. As well as discussing the history and development of technology we'll also explore practical techniques to improve your understanding of guitar process. There will be DIY workshops for setting up guitars, upgrading pickups and pots, making basic pedals and recording techniques. No previous experience of luthiery or electronics is required – and a passion for all things guitar is more important than technical proficiency. Why study this course? This is a hands on dynamic course utilising the best of our music facilities at Goldsmiths. You'll have the chance to learn more about the following guitar related topics:. Vintage and contemporary electric guitar design. Brands and models.
