About this course


This apprenticeship is suitable for those who are currently working within this sector or are looking to gain employment within this sector as a commis chef in an industrial environment such as café, airport, school or other industrial setting. This course is about learning, developing real skills and preparing you for a successful career as a professional chef. This course will enable you to cook to the highest standard.

This is dependent on your employer and on the level of the apprenticeship you apply for.

You will normally need at least grade C or above in your English and maths GCSEs. If you don't have these, don't worry. You can work towards your functional skills in English and maths alongside your apprenticeship training at St Helens College.

What type of work will I do and what qualifications will I gain?

Although apprenticeships will vary depending on your entry level and your employer, you will gain a range of skills from the varying tasks you complete, these could include:

  • Maintenance of a safe, hygienic and secure working environment
  • Working effectively as part of a hospitality team
  • Maintain food safety when storing, preparing and cooking food
  • Produce basic fish dishes
  • Produce basic vegetable dishes
  • Produce basic hot sauces
  • Produce basic rice, pulse and grain dishes
  • Produce basic hot and cold desserts
  • Produce basic cakes, sponges and scones
  • Produce cold starters and salads

You will also gain the following qualifications:

  • Competence and Knowledge Qualification - Level 2 NVQ Diploma in Professional Cookery (Food Production and Cooking) and Level 2 Certificate in Hospitality and Catering Principles (Professional Cookery)
