Application procedure

Applications must be made online using King’s online application portal apply.kcl.ac.uk and a non-refundable application fee of £60 applies. We recommend that you submit your application as soon as possible.

January 2020 entry:

The deadline for applications from non-EU (overseas) nationals is 25 October 2019 
The deadline for applications from UK/EU nationals is 2 December 2019

If you have already completed your degree, copies of your official degree certificate will also be required. Course programme

Course detail Description

Our programme is designed to provide participants with an advanced and comprehensive understanding of the theoretical and practical issues surrounding medical care within the relevant medical field of choice. The postgraduate face to face modules in the medical specialty of choice will cover the most-up-to-date and novel aspects of clinical care and by successfully completing one of the module, you will gain an in depth understanding of innovative care for patients in the selected field of medical expertise.

The programme includes optional modules in the following different medical specialties:

  • Children’s Health

  • Clinical Neuroscience

  • Haematology

  • Women’s Health

You will undertake two online modules, and then select a face to face module(s) depending upon your choice of medical speciality.

The programme fosters the intellectual skills of participants through:

  • Production of original pieces of written work that explain, review and evaluate primary research literature and using this evaluation to develop ideas and hypothesises.

  • Understanding and applying scientific and clinical study design and statistical analysis principles.

  • Collecting, interpreting and analysing data with a critical understanding of the appropriate contexts.

  • Gaining deeper theoretical understanding of the chosen specialised field of study.

  • Using subject knowledge and understanding to explore and solve familiar and unfamiliar problems.

  • Identifying areas that would benefit from further research within the selected medical specialty of choice.

  • Reading, writing about and discussing a range of literature on leadership and people management as it applies in clinical settings.

  • Critically reflecting upon the ways in which leadership and people management can affect performance outcomes.

  • Understanding of leadership skills development process through developing self-awareness: being aware of one’s own values, principles and assumptions and by being able to learn from experiences.

Course format and assessment

Teaching

The programme is delivered through a combination of face-to-face and online lectures, seminars and group tutorials. Two out of the three compulsory modules, Research Skills and Clinical Leadership, are delivered 100% online.

You will also be expected to undertake independent study.

Typically, one credit equates to 10 hours of work.

Assessment

Assessment methods will depend on the medical specialty and the modules selected (where more than one is available). We will assess you through a combination of coursework, essays, oral presentations and written exams.

The primary method of assessment for this course is written assignments and exams.

Structure

Year 1

Courses are divided into modules, and students on this course take modules totalling 60 credits.

Required Modules

You are required to take:

  • Research Skills (online, 15 credits)
  • Clinical leadership (online, 15 credits)

In addition, depending on your medical specialty of choice, you are required to take one of the following optional 30 credit modules:

  • Paediatric Cardiology (30 credits)

  • Neonatal Medicine (30 credits)

  • Paediatric Respiratory & Allergy (30 credits)

  • Paediatric Hepatology, Renal and Gastroenterology (30 credits)

  • Paediatric Critical Care (30 credits)

  • Paediatric Mental Health (30 credits)

Clinical Neuroscience:

  • Neurology in Clinical Practice (30 credits)

Haematology:

  • Clinical Haematology (30 credits)

Women and Children’s Health:

  • Fundamentals of Women’s and Children’s Health (30 credits)
