About this course

list the prominent, strong female roles in the top classic westerns
evaluate recent westerns on their own terms and as compared to classic westerns.
View and understand basic western stories from a different angle to focus on the narrative trajectory of the female lead.

View westerns from The Great Train Robbery (1903) to The Iron Horse (1927); early sound to eighties’ westerns: Cimarron to Heaven’s Gate. Find out how Shane influenced The Searchers, which influenced Once Upon A Time in the West.Saturday morning serials to adult westerns. Compare recent westerns to the narrative and style of the classic westerns: Jane Got Her Gun (Lynne Ramsey was to be the original director), Hostiles, Damsel, Brimstone, Wind River, Hell or High Water, Sweet Country.
