If you work in an engineering environment and need to improve your engineering maths in order to further your career or progress to a degree, this short part-time module (part of the BTEc HNC/D in Engineering) will develop your analytical skills to the standard required by the industry. We have a state-of-the-art modern engineering workshop equipped with a range of industry-standard equipment including millers, lathes, CNC tooling and laser cutters, along with fabrication and welding equipment, such as Tig, Mig and Arc welders and CAD suites.

About this course

As this module is part of an HNC/D qualification, you are required to be over 18 years of age and have the following qualifications: Two A Levels – preferably in maths or science OR BTec certificate or diploma in engineering or a related discipline - Mature students will be considered in light of relevant work/life experience - Non-EU students are required to have an IELTS or equivalent university qualification

During this course you will learn how: Analyse and model engineering situations and solve problems using algebraic methods Analyse and model engineering situations and solve problems using trigonometric methods Analyse and model engineering situations and solve problems using calculus Analyse and model engineering situations and solve problems using statistics and probability What skills will I gain? • By studying this course you will: Develop your previous mathematical knowledge and use fundamental algebra, trigonometry, calculus, statistics and probability for the analysis, modelling and solution of realistic engineering problems Explore algebraic methods - including polynomial division, exponential, trigonometric and hyperbolic functions, arithmetic and geometric progressions - in an engineering context and express variables as power series Develop your understanding of sinusoidal functions in an engineering concept - such as AC Waveforms - together with the use of trigonometric identities Gain knowledge of statistics and probability by looking at tabular and graphical representation of data, measures of mean, median, mode and standard deviation, the use of linear regression in engineering situations, probability and the Normal distribution How will I be assessed? This is an assignment-based course and there are no exams You will be continually assessed throughout the course via assignments and the production of a detailed portfolio What can I do next? Completion of the module will enable you to: Use the skills you have gained in the workplace Continue with further study and progress to the HNC/D in engineering
