Egypt is at the very apex of its international power and prestige. Amenhotep III is the greatest of its monarchs. His reign is documented by some of the most exciting and enigmatic archaeological discoveries made in the Nile Valley. A visit to the British Museum is included.

- Identify the principal historical and political developments during this period- Analyse and understand the literature and art relating to this period- Use appropriate strategies for handling this ancient evidence.
Limited book purchases recommended but optional.
Illustrated lectures, discussions, questions (and possibly quizzes), reading and analysis of original texts (in translation), museum visit. Above all, looking informed by reading. Additional museum visits and reading outside the course will greatly enhance the experience.

Course programme
We trace the key events in the pharaoh’s reign including his divine birth and his marriage to the ‘Great Royal Wife’, Tiye. Scarabs narrate the king’s prowess hunting lions and bulls and the extent of his domains. Evidence for diplomatic, trading and cultural relations with great contemporary cultures is examined including Crete, Mycenae and the Levant. The splendid artistic achievements of the court is illustrated – temples, palaces, sculptures, painting and jewellery. (The dramatic events later in the reign are documented in the follow-up course).
