You will be introduced to the culture of Ancient Greece mainly through the literary study of Homer's Odyssey, the tragic dramas of the three great playwrights - Aeschylus, Sophocles and Euripides - but also through some elements of history, art and archaeology. The course will particularly appeal to those already with an interest in English Literature, History, Art or Religious Studies as it offers insights into the founding principles, forms and concepts behind much of Western European culture.
A2
The second year extends your areas of study to new areas such as the comic dramas of Aristophanes, Menander and Plautus, as well as Roman epic in the form of Virgil's Aeneid and its relationship to Homer's Iliad where the tale of the Trojan war is told. Please note that there is now no coursework component on this course. Classical Civilisation is a well-recognised qualification for university entrance.
