About this course

Students should have at least 3 GCSE's at grade D or above and demonstrate a positive attitude to learning and developing themselves within the marine industry.
Students currently studying at college must have achieved either a PEO level 1 or level 2 in a marine / engineering based subject.
For mature students, entry criteria will be discussed on an individual basis.

Marine Engineering C&G Certificate Level 2

About the course:
This qualification is appropriate for anyone who is, or wants to be employed in the boatbuilding industry.

This certificate can be taken as part of an apprenticeship for the industry.

Course Content:
Mandatory units are:
  • Developing Self & Working Safely in a Marine Environment - This unit is concerned with safety awareness and communication skills needed to work effectively in the marine industry. It covers health and safety, interaction with other employees and an understanding of the terminology and structure of the industry.
  • Marine Engineering Processes and Principles - This unit is concerned with the identification of materials used in marine construction, the interpretation of drawings along with the tools and equipment used. It also covers the principles of marine electrical processes.

The two recommended units for the Marine Engineering pathway are:
  • Servicing & Maintenance of Marine Engines - Concerned with the principles and procedures associated with the basic servicing and maintenance of marine engines.
  • Marine Propulsion Systems - Concerned with the principles and procedures associated with the basic servicing and maintenance of propulsion systems and auxiliaries engines.


Equipment Requirements:
All equipment will be provided by the college. Students will however need to provide their own work-boots and overalls.

Assessment:
The assessment for this course is a mixture of online tests, practical and written assignments.

Progression:
Students may progress on to the City & Guilds level 3 certificate in Marine Engineering or a BTEC National Diploma in Marine Design at City College.
