AS and A2 level Critical Thinking (Extended Project Qualification)

Critical Thinking with the Extended Project Qualification is a brand new flexible, skills based course that will work with any programme of study. The course is different to the other subjects offered at College in that it does not require you to learn a large number of facts such as dates, names or concepts. Instead, you choose what you want to research and then are taught the skills that you will need to carry this out; forming an argument, analysing texts, managing projects and extended writing. These skills will help you with your other subjects as well as being relevant to any further courses or careers you might pursue.

With many of the most popular universities now introducing entrance examinations, Critical Thinking skills are increasingly been tested in an attempt to discover which of the applicants really have the skills required. Similarly, our experience with piloting an extended project over the last three years has shown us that it can often prove extremely helpful at interviews as they provide a basis for in-depth discussion.

WHAT WILL I BE STUDYING ON THE COURSE?
The Extended Project Qualification is yours to define. You can study whatever topic interests you most, be that the origins of the universe, the relationship between law and morality or the difficulties of translating Spanish poetry. You choose the content, we give you the skills to research this and produce a significant dissertation on your area of interest.

WHAT WILL I BE DOING IN LESSONS?
Your lessons will vary throughout the year. At first you will study a taught course, including Critical Thinking, which will give you the skills needed to conduct the Extended Project. As you are doing this you will be producing your proposal for the project and conducting a literature review that will provide the context for your project. After Christmas we will move to tutorial and research based lessons in which you will be free to conduct independent study on your topic as long as you meet carefully spaced deadlines. This will lead to writing up your report in the form of a 5,000 word dissertation. After your project is complete you will prepare and give a presentation on your findings.

HOW IS THE COURSE ASSESSED?
The assessment for the Extended Project Qualification covers both the process and the end product that you will create. The final project, plus the production log, will be assessed as a whole, according to a generic set of marking criteria. We'll be looking at how well students identify and use resources, carry out research, develop their ideas to realise an outcome and then reflect on the outcome and the process.

The AS units are:

·Introduction to Critical Thinking

The A2 units are:

WHAT OTHER SUBJECTS COULD I DO WITH CRITICAL THINKING AND THE EXTENDED PROJECT QUALIFICATION?
Students frequently tell us that the skills they develop in this course can be applied to all

other subjects. Consequently, Critical Thinking with the Extended Project Qualification would be an excellent course to take alongside any programme of study.

AND AFTER THE COURSE?
Critical Thinking is especially useful for students planning to study law, medicine, veterinary science or dentistry as these require entrance exams that directly test critical thinking skills. Also, careers in journalism, politics, business or any humanities discipline will be aided by the rigorous approach. Employers and universities are keen to take people on who listen keenly, think clearly, express themselves well and can prove that they are able to manage themselves effectively whilst producing significant pieces of work. The Critical Thinking with the Extended Project Qualification will develop your confidence in all these areas.

Requirement
Critical Thinking with the Extended Project Qualification is an excellent subject to complement the rest of your studies. To this end we recommend that first year students should take Critical Thinking with the EPQ as a fifth subject in most situations and only as a fourth if this would be especially appropriate for you. As a second year, Critical Thinking with the Extended Project Qualification can be taken by any student. It will help those whose other subjects require reasoning skills and it can provide powerful evidence for your passion and interest in study at university interviews.
