About the Course
Critical Thinking is well regarded by universities, particularly the more selective universities, and should probably be seen as an additional subject or an enhancement to your programme. It does not involve learning about facts but rather it teaches you the skills needed to think critically and then gives you opportunities to use these skills through a variety of activities.
AS Level
Unit 1: Introduction to Critical Thinking
Study and apply the language of reasoning and learn how you can assess the credibility of evidence.
Unit 2:
Assessing and Developing Argument
Learn how to assess arguments that you might find in newspapers, on TV or within the opinions and beliefs of other people. You will also learn how to clearly present your own arguments.
A2 Level
Unit 3:
Ethical Reasoning and Decision Making
You will apply the skills you have developed at AS Level in the context of ethical reasoning and decision making. You will also analyse and evaluate conflicting ideas and arguments from range of source material.
Unit 4: Critical Reasoning
Draw together all the skills you have learnt on the course and apply them to material of greater complexity.
Whilst the skills being taught can be quite complex, their application will be fun and interesting. You will look at a range of current issues and have the chance to think about and discuss some important questions such as â€-is climate change really happening?†and â€-is there a good reason for believing in spirits?â€
