About this course

A minimum of four GCSEs at grade C or better, preferably including English (language) and Maths or a BTEC First Diploma at Merit level and two GCSEs at grade C or better. However, we like to look at individual achievements and will consider a range of qualifications and experience. An ability to research information and meet deadlines is important.

AS and A2 level Travel and Tourism

An interesting and challenging course which will help you to develop the skills, knowledge and understanding you need for employment or Higher Education.

At AS, you will focus on developing an understanding of the travel and tourism industry and its individual sectors. At A2, you will be encouraged to develop a more critical understanding of the travel and tourism industry through sustained use of a range of research techniques and to apply this understanding in unfamiliar contexts. This will encourage you to take a holistic view of the industry and enable you to develop skills to deal with complex situations and problems.



WHAT WILL I BE STUDYING?
Travel and Tourism enables you to gain an understanding of many aspects of the industry.

AS units are:

·Introducing travel and tourism
·Customer Service in travel and tourism
·Travel destinations
A2 units are:

·Tourism development
·Event management
·The guided tour



WHAT WILL I BE DOING IN LESSONS?
Role play, making videos, visits and residential visits in the UK and abroad, research, interviewing, planning, reporting, group work and using IT all feature in the lessons. You will have the opportunity to work as part of a team, learn to plan effectively, and to undertake and evaluate a travel and tourism project. The emphasis will be on research and problem solving through assignments which focus on the world of work.

You will be encouraged to take part in trips to travel and tourism organisations with the aim of enhancing your understanding of the industry through valuable first-hand experience. Each visit will be directly related to current course topics and will help you develop necessary research and study skills. Please be aware therefore that as a Travel and Tourism student you will be expected to make a financial contribution towards the cost of participation. You and your parents will be notified of the planned programme of visits with estimated costs at the start of the year.

HOW WILL THE COURSE BE ASSESSED?
You will be assessed through a mixture of assignments and examinations. Students will do four coursework assignments and two external examinations.

Travel and Tourism combines well with all subjects. Popular combinations include Business Studies, Geography, Media Studies, Modern Foreign Languages and Physical Education.



AND AFTER THE COURSE?
Travel and Tourism is a useful qualification for a wide range of university courses. You could continue your studies in Higher Education on a degree course or HND. You could enter employment. You could combine employment with job related training and gain further accreditation for your skills and experience through an NVQ training programme.
