Introduction to course
In Chemistry you will study the composition properties and activity of organic and inorganic substances. Everything you see around you involves Chemistry in some way. Studying Chemistry will encourage you to keep your eyes open and if you knew what some things were made of, you wouldn't buy them! Chemists provide many of the materials of everyday life think of soap, fizzy drinks, plastic bottles and knowledge to improve healthcare and to understand the major environmental problems that face us all.

Course Details
Building upon GCSE Science, your understanding of quantitative and qualitative Chemistry, structures and patterns of reactions will be developed during the AS course, whilst in the second year more complicated areas of the subject will be considered. You will also study aspects of Chemistry that are often in the media and which affect your life. We have excellent laboratory facilities and equipment which will enable you to become good at qualitative and quantitative analysis and you will learn to synthesize organic chemicals. Assessment is by written exams and internally assessed practicals. There is no coursework.

Where the course lead
You will need Chemistry for medicine, veterinary and dentistry courses. Most biological, biochemical and environmental courses also require a sound knowledge of Chemistry. Chemistry is a very important subject for many other degree courses as it encompasses a wide range of skills as well as developing imaginative, logical and critical thinking.
