Course programme

Applied Art and Design
This vocational qualification is equivalent to one A Level. It is designed for students with a proven aptitude and commitment to a career within the field of Art and Design and can be studied alongside AS Art and Design. The course is designed to build a portfolio of work, which will support progression onto a Foundation Studies course or direct to Degree/ HND courses.
The first year is devoted to foundation skills including observational and analytical drawing, the language of visual communication, design thinking, and critical and contextual awareness.
In the second year students are required to opt for more specialisation so that they can produce suitable portfolios. The assessment criteria reflects professional practice and students are expected to acquire good organisational skills, take responsibility for their own record keeping and be able to present ideas effectively both verbally and in written work.
The department has established strong links with other educational and professional organisations enhancing the provision offered through visits, wokshops, visiting speakers and artists-in-residence.The course is assessed through practical coursework units - three units in the first year (AS year) and a further three units in the second year (A2), making six units in total. This is a vocational course leading to Higher Education and a career within the creative sector. Past students have gone on direct to degree or HND courses in Graphic Design, Fine Art, Fashion & Textiles, Art History etc but the majority take a Foundation Studies course before applying for degree courses.
