The Applied Linguistics and English Language Teaching MA is for experienced teachers wanting to learn more about current ELT/ESL research, theory, pedagogy and practice.

The course offers you an excellent opportunity to further your career in ELT and develop expertise in specialist fields such as language assessment and testing, materials development, teaching EAP, teacher education and teaching English as a lingua franca.

This MA course has three different pathways: the original MA course, fast-track route for applicants already holding the Cambridge Delta or Trinity House Diploma in ELT (advertised separately) and a Delta route, offered in conjunction with International House London. This route leads to the award of the Cambridge Delta, in addition to the MA itself.

A 2:1 class honours degree is usually required in a relevant subject (including, but not limited to, a modern foreign language, English, Education, Linguistics, etc.). If you have a lower degree classification, or a degree in an unrelated subject, your application may be considered if you can demonstrate significant relevant work experience, or offer a related graduate qualification (such as a Masters or PGDip).

Courses are divided into modules. You will take modules totalling 180 credits.

Required Modules

You are required to take the following modules:

  • Principles and Practices in Second/Foreign Language Teaching (30 credits)

  • Linguistic Analysis for Language Teaching (30 credits)

  • Second/Additional Language Acquisition (15 credits)

  • IH London practicum (30 credits)

  • Research Methods and Dissertation in Applied Linguistics/Language Learning and Teaching (60 credits)

If you are following the two-year course, you will normally take Principles and Practices in Second/Foreign Language Teaching (30 credits) and Second/Additional Language Acquisition (15 credits) during Year 1, and Linguistic Analysis for Language Teaching (30 credits), IH London practicum (30 credits) and Research Methods and Dissertation in AppliedLinguistics/Language Learning and Teaching(60 credits) during Year 2.

Optional Modules

In addition, you are required to take 15 credits of optional modules, which may typically include:

  • English for Academic Purposes (15 credits)

  • The Digital ELT Classroom (15 credits)

  • Materials Development in English Language Teaching (15 credits)

  • Teacher Education (15 credits)

If you are following the two-year course, you will normally take your 15 credit optional module during Year 2.
