Who is this course for?
The course will appeal to you if you prefer to learn science through practical work. If you enjoy doing assignments and project work based on science related workplace situations and are better suited to course work than exams this course could be for you.

What are the entry requirements?
You will need three GCSE passes at Grade E or equivalent in relevant subjects including Mathematics and a subject requiring ability in English. You should have Key Skills at Level 1 for Maths and working towards Key/Basic Skills Communication at Level 1. If you do not have formal entry requirements, you will be asked to take an assessment of your English and Maths skills. Induction is taken very seriously at this college. You will follow a five week induction where your suitability for the level and type of course you are hoping to be on will be assessed. Successful completion of the induction period will confirm you place on a course.
After applying you will have an interview to determine which course is suitable for your needs and abilities.
  • Minimum Literacy Level: Level 1

  • Reading: You can read and understand the main points and ideas in different types of writing - for example magazine articles, newspaper stories or short stories. You can understand main ideas from a report, read from a website or college text book, etc. You can use what you have read to help you write an essay or make decisions. Writing: You can present information in different ways. You can use grammar, spelling and punctuation correctly. You can present your thoughts and ideas in a clear way that people can understand.
  • Minimum Numeracy Level: Level 1

  • Interpret Information: You can read and understand tables, charts, graphs and diagrams; read and understand numbers used in different ways; read scales on familiar measuring equipment using everyday units; make accurate observations; identify suitable calculations to get the results you need for your task. Carry out calculations: You can add and subtract, with whole numbers and simple decimals, with or without a calculator; work to the level of accuracy you have been told to use; multiply and divide a simple decimal by a whole number with or without a calculator; understand and calculate simple fractions and percentages; work out the area and volum of rectangular-based shapes; use scale on diagrams; use ratio and proportion; find the average or mean of up to 10 items; find the range for up to 10 items.


What qualification will I receive?
A nationally recognised award, BTEC First Diploma NVQ Level 2. It is equivalent to 4 GCSEs at grades A* to C.

Where can it lead?
The First Diploma prepares you for employment and provides a good grounding to go on to more advanced courses such as BTEC National Diploma, Certificate or Award in Applied Science or related science and Technology areas. With further training or study, students go into careers such as : Forensic Science; Food Technology; Analytical Science; and Environmental Science.

What will I study?
Through the BTEC First Diploma, you will develop an understanding of the skills, facts and ideas used in the practice of science. You will learn how science is used, about its effects on our lives and how it benefits society. You will also learn how to find unbiased information about science and its uses.

As well as a BTEC First Diploma you will develop your Key Skills in the areas of
* communication;
* application of number;
* information technology;
* improving own learning performance.

Key Skills are highly valued by employers and universities.

How will I be taught?
You will learn about what engineers and scientists actually do in their jobs. You will learn by doing a variety of activities such as practical work, taking part in discussions, carrying out research and making presentations.

How will I be assessed?
Up to two thirds of the course will be internally assessed through assignments. One third of the course will be internally assessed through an externally set integrated assignment.

What support is available while I am on the course?
There are group tutorials covering such areas as study skills and career guidance. Individual tutorials provide support and guidance. Additional help is available for language and numeracy. There is substantial language support for students whose first language is not English. The College's extensive learning resources are available to all students.
