So often, in our experience, managers can be heard groaning when it’s “appraisal time”. They grumble about the amount of time they have to take out of their busy diaries to complete them as well as the amount of paperwork that has to be filled in. They are sadly viewed by many as a necessary evil, and something of a chore.
Not an ideal mind-set for the appraiser, and certainly not for the appraisee, for whom their annual appraisal is a significantly important opportunity for them to discuss their performance and determine their development plan.
In our view the appraisal performance meeting is a brilliant opportunity for any people manager to motivate their staff, make them aware that their achievements have been noticed and appreciated, give constructive feedback, and discuss the options available for training and future development and aspirations.
