Course ID:
PC10277

Academy:
Health, Social Care & Early Years

Introduction:
This course will explore the social problems faced by individuals and communities and it covers aspects of social policy and government initiatives. The course will enhance an employment profile and is also for those who wish to build up a portfolio of OCNW qualifications to gain entry to Higher Education (HE) to study Social Work or Youth & Community Work or a general Social Science degree. As such, this is an academic course with substantial written content and an examination. It is particularly aimed at Adult learners who would like to progress to University but who do not have the relevant qualifications to enter usually because they have had a break in education or have chosen a new career path.

Study Mode & Location:
This one year Part-Time course will be held at Preston College, Fulwood Campus, St. Vincent's Road, Preston, PR2 8UR.

Course Content:
Lectures will be interactive involving contributions from learners in discussions, student-led activities and student presentations. We try, where possible, to engage in out-of-College activities and also aim to bring guest speakers into College. It is CRUCIAL that you understand the volume of work required and the level of commitment to achieve the qualification and, as such, you need to allow for considerable time spent on private study if you are to be successful on the course.

Assessment:
Assessment at Level 2 follows a three step process which includes:

· A short assignment (500 words)

· An extended assignment (1000 words)

· Compilation of a portfolio of class notes and extended research

Each Level 3 Subject consists of 4 Unit assessments as follows:

· One 1000 word essay

· One 2000 word essay

· One 2000 word research project

· One 2 hour examination

Your Subject Tutor will give assistance in scheduled timetabled slots in all areas of assessment and time is put aside for revision.

Careers & Progression Opportunities:
There is an exceptionally high rate of successful progression from this Access course. Students have progressed to degrees in Social Work and Youth & Community Work and various other degrees such as the BA in Care, Community and Citizenship at UCLan. A further consideration may be the Foundation Degree in Integrated Education and Care of Children and Young People which can be studied at Preston College. Other learners have enhanced their profile and gained additional confidence. This course may also improve employment prospects in the field of voluntary and private social care agencies as well as within Social Services and health care. Many learners have been offered work as a direct result of undertaking the Level 2 Reflective Practice Skills.
