  • So far experience has been mixed. the most important thing to me is the course and this has been good to a point. Most of the modules are engaging and teach a variety of skills and the majority of the tutors are helpful and have great amounts of knowledge of the industry. however there hes been some disappointments. The course currently does not offer training in software, which is a critical skill in order to get a job in practice. The tutors are aware of this but the current expectation is to teach this to ourselves. The university also has failed to fulfill is promise in the 'no hidden extras' promise advertised when I joined the university as this year we are expected to make a significant contribution towards our compulsory trip which last year was virtually free. There was also a reduction in the quality and volume of equipment provided this year in comparison to previous years. So far there has been no explanation provided for this change and has left me and fellow students disappointed that we have been mislead. We are also unhappy about how the university does not include students in major decisions . The biggest being the courses move from the engineering faculty to the arts and humanities without warning just before the course started. The first we heard of it was the day we arrived! This was a move that resulted in our course becoming neglected and isolated from key facilities such as computer suits. We are also isolated geographically as our studio/ lecture space is still in an engineering building.

WHY CHOOSE THIS COURSE?

This course provides an innovative response to the challenges of the environmental, economic and social climate of the early 21st century. You will engage in the full depth and breadth of contemporary architectural education whilst also participating in interdisciplinary work with other building and construction courses.

If you choose this course you will benefit from:

  • a course which has been designed according to the EU criteria for architectural education and is currently prescribed by the Architects Registration Board (ARB);*
  • established links with architectural and engineering practices and institutions on a national and international level;
  • the opportunity to work on real projects in and around the city and wider area;
  • access to teaching staff who are active researchers in their field and have professional industrial experience, as well as visiting tutors who are currently in architectural practice;
  • a dynamic approach to learning which offers an enormous potential for design creativity and innovation in architecture, including a strong studio culture which provides a community of learning, crossing the traditional boundaries of teacher and learner;
  • study visits to museums, historic and contemporary buildings in the UK and beyond;
  • access to specialist industry-standard software, such as graphic and technical drawing, 3D modelling, environmental modeling and building design;

Accreditations

Coventry University’s BSc (Hons) Architecture is currently prescribed by the Architects Registration Board (ARB), subject to periodic review, for the purposes of entry onto the United Kingdom Register of Architects. Prescription is normally granted on a four-yearly basis subject to ARB being satisfied that standard requirements have been met. The prescription of this qualification will be due for renewal by 3 May 2016 as part of the four-yearly review cycle.

WHAT WILL I LEARN?

This is a course which brings together arts and the humanities with science and technology. In the first two years of study you will cover the fundamental areas of architecture including: design, technology, cultural context and communication.

In the third year you will undertake a comprehensive design project that incorporates the core subjects of design, technology and environment and reflects your own emerging design philosophy as well as learning about professional duties and practice of architecture. You will also be required to undertake a written dissertation on a subject which links to your work. Furthermore you will work on an integrated design project with other students studying related professions in the School.

HOW WILL THIS COURSE BE TAUGHT?

The core learning environment for the architecture course is the design studio, where, supported by regular lectures, seminars and your own self study you will be guided in your studies and receive feedback on your work, through tutorials and reviews.

You will work on projects based on real-world problems from industry, commerce and research groups, in response to issues current in wider society, as you would in professional practice; this will mean that you develop the professional and intellectual skills of an architect at the same time as you learn the theoretical and technical content of your degree.

If you are interested in part-time study (which is taught during the day) please contact the Part-time Admissions team on +44 (0) 24 7765 4321 or email part-time.uni@coventry.ac.uk for further information, but please note that not all courses have a part-time option.

HOW WILL I BE ASSESSED?

An estimated percentage breakdown of how your final grade is assessed is as follows: coursework, essays 20%; practical or project work 50%; group work 10%; presentations etc. 20%.

A compulsory Add+vantage module must also be completed: please see the page on the Add+vantage scheme for more details.

TEACHING CONTACT HOURS

Medium group teaching: 12 hours of lectures and design studio including presentations and workshops each week

Large group teaching: class sizes on this course are normally such that most of teaching is in small or medium sized groups
