Art & Design BTEC First Diploma Level 2

About the course:
This Course is designed to introduce and extend knowledge in Art & Design. The course offers the opportunity to experiment with a wide range of media and techniques. Working within the visual arts industry is challenging, rewarding and changing all the time. Students can progress onto the National Diploma or gain employment following the course. Areas of possible future work range from Fine Art practice to curating exhibitions. City College has new and extensive studios and is ideal to study the art disciplines. All staff are practising artists in their own field and highly qualified to teach using specialist computer programmes, 3D workshops, textiles in spacious studios.

Success Story:
Alex came to us from Great Oaks School in Southampton, having obtained WJEC as his only academic qualification. He has a number of health issues, including Aspergers and Autism, and because of this he was initially placed on the Btec Introductory Diploma, which is a level 1 course.

Within a very short time it became clear that Alex's abilities were way above those required at level 1, and he was moved up to the level 2 Btec 1st Diploma. He has flourished on this course, and with the help of our LSA, Kim, who helps him with his written work, he has consistently obtained Merits and Distinctions across all of the units studied. In addition to this, he was awarded a prize for achieving 100% attendance, and has designed the poster for the end of year Arts Festival. Alex is extremely popular, so much so that he was voted Student Rep by the group, and he has made many friends in the Art and Design department.

Some of Alex's work (along with that of another student, Jess) is also being featured in a book on the Btec 1st Diploma which has been commissioned by Edexcel and will be on general sale across the country.

Next year Alex will be starting the Level 3 14-19 Diploma in Creative and Media, and when he has achieved this, he hopes to go to Solent University to study Animation or Media.

Although Alex is the outstanding success story of the year, the group have been so successful that all of the students who were originally placed on the Introductory Diploma have been moved up a level to the 1st Diploma, where they, along with all the other students on the course, have achieved Merits and Distinctions across the board.

We are extremely proud of all of them and wish them continued success.
