Course outline

This is a one-year vocational qualification which will give you the opportunity to experience a wide range of Art and Design skills and techniques. These will include drawing, painting, printing, sculpture, ceramics, textiles, design and looking at the work of other artists.

Throughout the course you will be encouraged to be as creative as possible, developing your ideas to produce interesting and exciting art work.

Students who have a strong interest in Art and Design and want to expand their knowledge and understanding from GCSE study this course.

If you like drawing things from life or you want to improve and develop your skills in a variety of art and design areas through experimentation, then this course is for you.

How you will learn

You will learn, through a variety of diverse and broad ranging projects, how to develop ideas from different starting points through to final 2D and 3D outcomes using a variety of media. You will also learn about other artists work that will help you make connections with your own work and ideas.

There will be opportunities for workshops and one-to-one tuition from experienced teachers with different art specialisms who are passionate about their subject.

How you will be assessed

All of the evidence needed to pass this subject is produced through coursework.

Throughout the course there are many practical learning opportunities including: individual and group projects, workshops, set assignments and gallery and museum visits.

There are some theoretical aspects to the course which include: evaluation of your projects, annotation of your sketchbooks and writing about the work of other artists.

Other complementary subjects

The course is full-time therefore you need to think carefully about the selection of other subjects. Many students utilise the year to improve upon their literacy, numeracy and IT skills. Support will be given during this process.
