Overview
This post A level, UAL specialist one year Art Foundation course bridges the gap between Level 3 and Level 4 study and is completed in three stages. Stage 1 introduces you to a range of art/design skills including, fine art, photography, textiles, fashion, visual communication and 3D. Stage two develops your chosen specialism in more depth, and at stage 3 you will propose a final major project and produce work for an open public exhibition. All aspects of this prestigious course will give you the confidence to further develop your specialisms at HE level.
Entry Requirements
You will have completed and passed a minimum of one A2 Level (preferably in a creative subject) plus five GCSEs grades A-C, which must include a creative subject, English and maths. Alternatively you must have a Level 3 Extended Diploma in Art and Design or an associated creative subject at Merit grade, plus 5 GCSEs grades A-C, which must include a creative subject, English and maths. At interview you will be required to present a portfolio of recent artwork which demonstrates your ability to think creatively and develop your ideas.

Skills and Benefits
The University of the Arts London (UAL) Foundation Diploma in Art and Design is a 1 year pre-university course aimed at providing a fresh, flexible and challenging approach to this pivotal art and design qualification. The units are designed with open assessment criteria to encourage exploration, experimentation and risk taking.
Mandatory Units
The course has three stages: Stage1 - A 4 week diagnostic timetable to introduce the 4 main areas of Art & Design disciplines taught on this course, which are Combined Media, Fashion, 3D and Visual Communication. During this stage you will experience new skills with innovative and experimental approaches to Art & Design. Assessment & Tutorials will enable you to choose a specialist area of study in Stage 2 of the course. Stage 2 - At this stage work is generated via staff and learner based projects. Research, experimentation and independent study are promoted. Stage 3 - At Stage 3 a project proposal (500 words) is devised independently which forms the basis of the Final Major Project.
Optional Units
You will be advised on completing the final units at Level 3 or Level 4 by your tutors.
Course Assessment
There are 7 units that make up the qualification; units 1 – 6 are graded at pass only with the final unit, unit 7, graded at pass, merit or distinction. You will be assessed at several stages throughout the course and you will take part in self-assessment exercises.
Progression
You can progress on to one of the Visual Arts BA (Hons) Degree courses here at Stockport College or to a range of creative degree courses at other institutions across the country.
