Art and Design (BTEC National)
Level: Advanced Level 3

Awarding Body: EDEXCEL BTEC

Course Content:
This is a 12 unit course over 2 years. You will spend 11 hours a week studying Art and Design. The first year is a general Art and Design course, within which you will experiment 2 and 3D fine art, surface pattern, fine art textile techniques and graphic design techniques.

In the second year you will work towards outcomes within one of the specialist areas. The National Certificate is designed to enable students to apply to specialist art and design degree courses in the second year. You will study historical and contextual studies throughout the course.

You will have the opportunity to work with design IT packages such as Illustrator, Adobe Photoshop and PageMaker. As well as your practical work, you will develop skills in communication and IT.

There are no timed examinations. Assessment is of your portfolio. At the end of the course you undertake a Final Major Project that is worth double the other units.

You will:
- Develop skills and knowledge in art and design
- Develop key skills which are highly valued by employers and educational institutes
- Gain confidence through independent learning

Teaching Learning Methods:
The course is project based, working as individuals or as a group. Sessions are teacher led, with a responsibility on students to continue working in the classrooms in their own time, and carry out independent research. You will be set homework weekly.

Assessment:
Refer to Course Content. For each project you will get a point score of 2 (pass), 4 (merit) or 6 (Distinction). At the end of the course you will be awarded a double grade i.e. D/M, which will correspond to the A Level points system for application to University.

Skills & Commitment:
Students embarking on the BTEC National Certificate must be extremely well motivated and have a passion for art and design. They must be willing to put in many hours of their own time both within college, at home and undertaking visits to galleries and museums. It is vital that students attend lessons punctually, regularly and works consistently, meeting all deadlines.

Students must be prepared to work in a wide variety of areas, to be open minded and questioning. Students will regularly be asked to present their work to the group, and must be prepared to take feedback and constructive criticism from teachers and peers in the supportive manner in which it is intended. Students need to try to be enthusiastic and positive about their work and studies.

Cost:
The St Charles Art Department is extremely well resourced with specialist equipment for many disciplines. Most consumable materials are provided by the department. We do however; require students to buy an art kit upon arrival to the department. The cost will be no more than £18 per student. This ensures that all students are equipped to work at home. Students will also sometimes be asked to contribute towards more sophisticated materials that they use.

Students will be expected to visit galleries and exhibitions at their own cost.

Progression:
Students will be encouraged to progress to university courses such as HNDs and B.A. Honours degree courses.
