About this course

5 GCSE grades A* - C including art and Design or a related creative subject and English. Alternatively, a MERIT grade in BTEC First Diploma or GNVQ Intermediate in a relevant vocational area, again supported by a GCSE grade C in English. In exceptional circumstances entry will be allowed by portfolio.

Introduction to course
The Art, Design and Photography Department is situated in the new Drapers' Building and boasts new purpose-built facilities with specialist studios for: Fine Art., Sculpture, Print making, Photography, Computer aided design. The department has a dynamic atmosphere where creative work is supported by facilities from the traditional to the high-tech and has staff with a variety of specialist backgrounds. The department encourages independence, ambition and theoretical and practical rigour through the study of Art, Design and Photography. You will be expected to buy an art kit which will contain the essential equipment you will need for your art courses.

Course Details
The BTEC National Certificate in Art & Design is made up of twelve units. Five of these are core units which aim to develop drawing and general craft based skills, the creation and development of ideas in response to set projects, visual language, and the historical and contextual understanding of art and design. In addition you are required to study seven specialist units which will cover photography in the first year and architecture in the second, with the remaining second year units being based around flexible projects that will allow you concentrate on personal specialisms such as textiles, fashion design, graphics, illustration, or animation amongst many others.

Where the course lead
The course gives you a stimulating experience that will enhance your creative knowlege and skills and provide you with a quality portfolio of artwork. Progression options include going on to study a one year Foundation Diploma in Art & Design in preparation for a specific art related university course, going straight to university or leaving education to begin a career in one of a range of Art & Design fields.

This course combines well with
The BTEC National Certificate is automatically accompanied by BTEC National Award Interactive Media (Animation & web design) in order to make a full programme equivalent to three A Levels. To give you the best chance to progress, a separate Literacy qualification at level 2 is also studied as an automatic part of the course and is combined with the art history unit. In addition to Interactive Media and Literacy, this programme may, in exceptional circumstances, be combined with an additional AS level, BTEC Award or the EPQ (Extended Project Qualification)

Course Assessment
This BTEC National Certificate in Art & Design and the accompanying BTEC National Award in Interactive Media courses are both 100% coursework, with a muliple choice exam being required in order to gain the accompanying literacy qualification.
