Course programme
Through an exciting range of workshops, lectures and demonstrations, you will be introduced to the practical and technical skills needed by a contemporary graphic designer.
At interview, we will discuss with you your entry qualifications, experience and career goals. This, along with your portfolio, will form the basis of your starting point on the Art and Design Diploma (Graphic Design) Level 3 programme.
The 90 Credit Diploma is a one year programme. However, following successful completion of the 90 Credit Diploma and appropriate achievement of other elements of the study programme, you may then be able to progress to a second year of study on the 180 Credit Extended Diploma in Art and Design (Graphic Design).
The 90 Credit Diploma enables you to explore a range of design skills including marketing and advertising, illustration, print, web design, flash animation, point of sale, editorial and magazine layout, typography and photography. Continuing to the 180 Credit Diploma, you will be able to continue to develop you skills and understanding of the graphic design industry.
Entry requirementsFor the 90 Credit Diploma you will need:
- A minimum of four GCSEs at grades A*-C (including English or an appropriate equivalent), or:
- Appropriate Level 2 Diploma with a 'merit' profile plus GCSE English at grade A*-C or an equivalent Level 2 literacy qualification.
- Portfolio of design work.
For the Extended Diploma you will need:
- A minimum of five GCSEs at grades A*-C (including English and maths or an appropriate equivalent), or:
- Level 2 Diploma with a 'merit' profile plus GCSE English and maths at grade A*-C
- Portfolio of design work.
You will need to attend an interview with the tutor before being accepted on to the course. You may also need to supply at least one written reference from a teacher or employer (in some cases two) and/or your current school or college report.
Mature students (those aged 21 or over) who do not have the qualifications required for entry may still be eligible, subject to an interview at which we will discuss all relevant experience, your portfolio of work and career goals.
Start dates and feesThe table below shows you when the course starts. You may be charged a fee for your course depending on your age and circumstances. If you are aged 24 or over and studying a qualifying Level 3, 4 or 5 course you may be able to apply for a 24+ Advanced Learning Loan to cover the costs.

How long is the course?The 90 Credit Diploma is a one year course and the 180 Credit Diploma is a two year course.
After successful completion of the 90 Credit Diploma study programme, and following appropriate advice and guidance, you may continue your study for a further year in order to achieve the full Extended Diploma (180 Credit).

Assessment takes place through controlled assignments set by tutors and externally verified.
You will take part in projects and practical workshops based on realistic workplace situations.
What does the course lead to?The 90 Credit and 180 Credit Diplomas are nationally recognised qualifications. The 180 Credit Diploma at Level 3 is equivalent to three A Levels and will support an application to Higher Education as well as developing many of the wider skills required for progression to employment.
Study programmesIt is an entry requirement for some courses to have gained GCSEs A*-C in English and maths (see entry requirements). If the entry requirements to a course do not require A*-C in these subjects, and you haven’t already gained GCSEs A*-C in English and maths before joining us, you will continue to study English and maths as part of your programme and take appropriate qualifications in these subjects with the aim of achieving A* to C grade. In addition, to help you gain essential skills for employment, every student aged under 19 and studying a full-time course at college will take part in our study programmes alongside their main subject qualification. What can I go on to study?- Following successful completion of the 90 Credit Diploma study programme you may be able to progress to the 180 Credit Diploma.
- Following successful completion of the 180 Credit Diploma you could progress to university-level qualifications such as a degree or HND in graphic design or other related area, or you could go on to further training or employment.
