There will be a series of dedicated taught modules that include approaches to themes and ideas in art and design history. You will acquire advanced essay writing and research skills to tailor your own path of study according to your particular interests and aspirations. You can also take part in activities and study trips organised by the Department of Critical and Historical Studies.
Assessment is by a unique combination of essay, presentation, dissertation and optional project-led research, enabling you to develop your understanding and application of art and design history in ways that are relevant to your research and career aims.

About this course
This course provides an interdisciplinary study of the history of both art and design.
The Major Project allows you to develop your own interests and gain valuable research skills for writing a dissertation or producing a creative project.
Alongside your academic studies, you are able to develop skills in:
workshop activities (including 3D, moving image and printmaking)
problem solving and organisation;
data collation, review and synopsis;
communication (oral, written and electronic);
time management;
computing; and
co-operation and teamwork.
Art and Design History lead to work in the cultural industries, and to further academic study. Students have gone on to find positions in institutions that conserve, promote and research cultural heritage and history.These include museums, galleries and universities in the UK and internationally. Other roles are:
publishing
arts journalism
advertising
marketing
museum education
media production
gallery administration
arts programming
PhD research
art history;
design history;
a humanities subject, such as English literature, film and media studies or sociology;
a practice-based degree in an area such as fine art with some art history.
