History of Art at both AS and A2 will appeal to any student who has an interest in the visual culture of the past and present. In the AS course you will learn about the development and significance of the traditions of Western Art. You will develop the ability to explore and respond to art works and will learn how to apply art historical terms and concepts to such works. The principal aim of the course is to allow the student to develop their own critical judgement and become well versed in the history of both art (including architecture) and artists.
The History of Art specification offers an introduction to art history and an in-depth research (A2 level) that will readily complement further study at university. The course provides an opportunity to research painting, sculpture and architecture from a variety of artistic periods. These include Greek antiquity, Michelangelo and the Renaissance through to the Cubism of Picasso and the Pop Art of Warhol.
ENTRY RECOMMENDATIONS:
Grade C or above in GCSE English. No previous knowledge of art history is required. Candidates who wish to study this course do not have to have any practical skills either as it is based on written research and direct observation.
ASSESSMENT:
AS - Three written exams.
A2 - Two written exam papers.
