  • Middlesex has superb facilities for art and design. I viewed a number of university fine art departments before applying and it seemed to me that Middlesex had amongst, in some respects absolutely, the best technical facilities in London. I was also impressed with the time and trouble that teaching staff took with me. One of the strengths of the course is our relationship with the ICA (Institute of Contemporary Arts), where we participate in a variety of research-related events.

About this course

The School of Art and Design at Middlesex University hosts some of the UK's most experienced and renowned practitioners with cross disciplinary experience in the fields of community based and socially engaged art practice.

The MA Art and Social Practice builds on the School's historical roots in the progressive Hornsey College of Art, at the forefront of encouraging artists to engage and participate with communities and institutions to positively impact the world around them. Its Socially Engaged Practices research cluster will provide you with a productive environment for debate and critical enquiry across creative disciplines where ideas can be shared and collaborations fostered. At the same time, an annual virtual symposium will connect you with others immersed in parallel fields of study nationally and internationally to extend your horizons, widen your knowledge and forge connections for the future.

This practice based course is one of the few postgraduate programmes in the UK specifically designed for cultural practitioners, or those with experience of working creatively in the fields of community development, urban studies or cultural management, who wish to develop their work in an outward facing way. You will leave the course well equipped to pursue self initiated projects and commissions or develop your work through the cultural and community sectors.

Your portfolio
Be selective about the work you show while continuing to show a range of skills and ability
Show mostly recent work that you are most proud of
Consider how to present your work and the impression the overall look of your portfolio will have on the viewer
We like to see lots of work but don't overfill your portfolio; you should be able to carry it by yourself!
You do not need to bring large pieces of 3D work; photographs are sufficient.
Your interview
The interview itself usually lasts about 15 minutes, but please allow an hour...
