About the subject
The course aims to encourage an adventurous and enquiring approach to the subject within an understanding of past and contemporary art and design practice. The disciplines encountered within the department include drawing, painting, printmaking, graphic design, textiles, fashion, ceramics and sculpture.
Students are supported as independent learners, developing an artistic and personal professionalism towards their studies and possible future careers in the arts.
The AS/A Level course consists of 2 coursework units over the two years and two examination projects taken at the end of each year. These projects cover an exciting variety of subjects, skills and approaches introduced over the AS year with an opportunity to specialise in one or more area in the second year.
Learning Styles
The units require students to take a dynamic personal approach to project work through the development of a variety of skills. These include investigative, analytical, experimental, practical, technical and expressive skills, as well as aesthetic understanding and critical judgement.
Each piece of work builds upon the knowledge, understanding and skills gained from the last; this helps students' work to progress naturally in complexity, maturity and individuality.
Students are guided through the course by a range of learning experiences:
- one to one tutorials to review progress and set individual targets.
- group presentations to discuss homework, research and approaches.
- studio based skills sessions.
- personal research and study.
- gallery visits, lectures, slide and video presentations.
Subject combinations and progression
Art and Design is ideal for students wishing to broaden the breadth of their AS studies as well as those who intend to make a career within the Arts. Coursework will reflect particular interests that the students may develop and career paths can be as diverse as fashion design, animation, graphic design, architecture, museum administration and a place within the Fine Art world.
Those students with a serious interest in art and design may also take a specialist Further A Level Art subject in either Graphic Design or Textiles alongside General Art and Design. This considerably strengthens their portfolio of work for entry straight to degree, often eliminating the need for the one year Foundation Course in Art and Design after A Levels.
