National Diploma in a related subject at merit grade or equivalent, such as AS Levels
Three GCSEs at grade C
Good portfolio demonstrating a satisfactory standard of work, particularly in the area of objective drawing
Successful interview
Satisfactory reference
If your work exhibits strong ability in the view of the interview panel, then the need for the minimum entry requirements may be waived.

Diploma in Foundation Studies (Art & Design)

Course Aims:
The course aims to provide you with an intensive experience of a full range of Art & Design disciplines within the context of a diagnostic, drawing based programme. Most students on the course use it as an additional year (after completing a National Diploma course, for example) to enable them to build their portfolio to help their application to university.

Course Content:
You will study a range of subject areas, including:
Fine art
3-dimensional design (wood, metal and plastics)
Fashion and textiles
Surface patterns
Interior designs
Graphic design and illustration
Animation
Advertising
Printmaking
Ceramics
Computer/electronic design
Contextual studies

You will also use computer software, including QuarkXPress, Adobe Illustrator and Adobe Photoshop.

The final term is used for interview preparation and a specialist project, which is exhibited at the annual College Art Show in June.

Some additional subjects, such as Photography, are also available to study.

Progression:
On successful completion of the course, you may progress to specialist degree-level courses at university, including Fine Art, Fashion Design and Graphic Design. At Southport College, we run a very successful BA (Hons) Fine Art programme in conjunction with Liverpool John Moores University.

Exam:
You will be continuously assessed through the production of your Art & Design portfolio.

You will also be externally assessed for your final specialist piece.
